How to Get Your Business Cited by ChatGPT, Perplexity & Google AI Search

To get your business cited by AI tools like ChatGPT, Perplexity and Google AI Overviews, you need Answer Engine Optimization (AEO): publishing clear, question-led, factually specific content that AI systems can extract, and building enough authority across the web that they treat your brand as a credible source. Unlike traditional SEO, the goal isn't a ranking — it's being named inside the answer itself.

Why this matters now

Search behaviour has split in two. People still type queries into Google, but a fast-growing share now ask an AI assistant — "what's the best CRM for a small law firm," "who does AEO in Europe" — and act on the single answer it gives. If your brand isn't in that answer, you're invisible to that buyer, no matter how well you rank in the blue links.

And ranking well is not enough on its own. An Ahrefs study from February 2026 found that only about 38% of pages cited in Google's AI Overviews also rank in the traditional top 10. In other words, AI engines often cite sources that classic SEO would never surface — which means AI visibility is a distinct discipline you have to optimise for deliberately.

What AEO actually is

Answer Engine Optimization is the practice of structuring your content and online presence so AI systems select your brand as the answer to relevant questions. SEO asks "how do I rank this page?" AEO asks "how do I get this fact attributed to us inside an AI response?" The two overlap, but they reward different signals. For a full comparison, see AEO vs SEO vs GEO.

How AI engines decide what to cite

AI answer engines favour content that is

  • Clear and direct — the answer stated plainly, not buried under three paragraphs of preamble.
  • Specific and factual — concrete numbers, named entities, dates and definitions are easier to extract and quote than vague marketing language.
  • Well-structured — headings, short paragraphs, lists and tables map cleanly to the questions models are answering.
  • Corroborated — engines lean toward claims that appear consistently across multiple trusted sources, so being referenced elsewhere on the web matters.
  • Fresh — current, dated content is preferred for anything time-sensitive.
  • Attached to a recognised entity — the system has to be confident who you are before it cites you, which is where consistent naming and schema come in.

The AEO playbook: 9 things to do

  1. Lead with the answer. Put a direct, self-contained answer in the first 40–60 words of every page and section. That's the chunk most likely to be lifted into an AI response.
  2. Write the way people ask. Use real questions as headings ("How much does X cost?", "Is Y worth it?"). This mirrors the prompts users type into AI tools.
  3. Be specific. Replace "we deliver great results" with concrete facts, ranges and named examples. Extractable facts get cited; adjectives don't.
  4. Structure for extraction. Short paragraphs, descriptive H2/H3s, bullet lists, and comparison tables. Keep answer chunks roughly 80–150 words — long enough to be substantive, short enough to quote.
  5. Build entity authority. Use one consistent business name everywhere, add Organization schema, and keep your name, address and contact identical across your site, profiles and directories so engines treat you as a single, confident entity.
  6. Earn third-party mentions. AI engines cite sources they see referenced elsewhere. Guest articles, directories, partner pages, PR and genuine backlinks build the corroboration that gets you picked over competitors.
  7. Keep content fresh. Revisit and update key pages. Dated, current content outperforms stale pages for time-sensitive questions.
  8. Use Q&A sections. A clear FAQ block is one of the easiest formats for AI to extract. Mark it up with FAQPage schema — Google retired FAQ rich results in May 2026, but it confirmed it still parses the markup, and Bing and AI crawlers read it too.
  9. Measure your citations. Track how often and where your brand is mentioned across ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini and Google AI Overviews, and which content earns the mentions, so you can do more of what works.

Common mistakes to avoid

Don't keyword-stuff, don't bury the answer, and don't publish thin "FAQ filler" written only for machines — AI systems increasingly discount low-value content. And don't assume your SEO agency is doing this: most still optimise purely for rankings, which is a different game.

FAQ

Is AEO the same as SEO?

No. SEO aims to rank your pages in search results; AEO aims to get your brand cited inside AI-generated answers. They overlap but reward different signals, and a page can be cited by AI without ranking in the top 10.

How long does AEO take to work?

Like SEO, it compounds over months rather than days. AI engines need to crawl your content, and citation also depends on your entity authority and third-party mentions building over time.

Can I do AEO myself?

The basics — answer-first writing, clear structure, an FAQ — you can start today. Entity authority, schema, content architecture and citation monitoring are where a specialist partner adds the most value.
